Resilient Suppressors Jolene on a Q mini FIX 300 BLK with 8-in Barrel

The Jolene is manufactured by Resilient Suppressors. It is a 30 caliber centerfire rifle silencer, intended to suppress many cartridges with projectiles appropriately sized to travel through the bore, including magnum rounds, subject to stipulated barrel length and firing schedule restrictions.  The Jolene has a 1.6-inch diameter and is 8.8 inches long with no mount. The rear of the silencer is threaded with the so-called HUB 1.375”-24tpi threading, allowing the use of a variety of mounting solutions. With the included specialized Resilient Suppressors direct thread mount, the silencer’s length increases to 9.1 inches. The silencer and mount are constructed entirely from Grade 5 titanium.  The silencer weighs 9.9 ounces, and the direct thread mount weighs 0.9 ounces, for a total system weight of 10.8 ounces, as tested. The Jolene can be obtained from Resilient Suppressor Dealers.

This Sound Signature Review contains single-test results using the Jolene with its direct thread mount on the Q mini FIX bolt action pistol, chambered in 300 BLK with an 8-inch barrel. Discreet Ballistics 190gr ammunition was used in the test.

Summary: When paired with the Q mini FIX 8” 300 BLK and fired with Discreet Ballistics 190gr Subsonic Target ammunition, the Resilient Suppressors Jolene achieved a composite Suppression Rating™ of 67.6 in PEW Science testing.

The supersonic .308 performance of the Resilient Suppressors Jolene is detailed in Sound Signature Review 6.137, in which it achieved a composite Suppression Rating of 50.4.

6.138.1 Resilient Suppressors Jolene Sound Signature Test Results

A summary of the principal Silencer Sound Standard performance metrics of the Jolene is shown in Table 1. The data acquired 1.0 m (39.4 in) left of the muzzle is available for viewing to all. This is a members-only review and includes pressure and impulse waveforms measured at the shooter’s ear. 6.138.1.1 SOUND SIGNATURES AT THE MUZZLE

Real sound pressure histories from a 5-shot test acquired with PEW-SOFT™ are shown below. The waveforms are not averaged, decimated, or filtered. The data acquisition rate used in all PEW Science laboratory sound signature testing is 1.0 MS/s (1 MHz). The peaks, shape, and time phasing (when the peaks occur in relation to absolute time and to each other) of these raw waveforms are the most accurate of any firearm silencer testing publicly available. PEW-SOFT data is acquired by PEW Science independent laboratory testing; the recognized industry leader in silencer sound research. For more information, please consult the Silencer Sound Standard.

The primary sound signature pressure histories for all 5 shots are shown in Figure 1a. A zoomed-in timescale displays the region of peak sound pressure in Figure 1b, for the first two shots. The real sound impulse (momentum transfer potential) histories from the same 5-shot test are shown in Figure 2a. In Figure 2b, a shorter timescale is shown comparing the impulse of Shot 1 to that of Shot 2 and Shot 3.

As previously shown in the testing of the Resilient Suppressors Jolene in the 7.62x51mm supersonic ammunition combustion regime (6.137), it is a high performance 30 caliber rifle silencer.  That performance carries over to the subsonic ammunition regime, as shown in the above figures.  The following performance traits are noted:

  1. Overall pressure signatures occur with relatively low amplitude (Fig. 1a).

  2. Subsonic projectile pressure wave formation is relatively uniform between shots (Fig. 1b).

  3. Combustion histories are uniform throughout the blowdown cycle, with consistent impulse accumulation (Fig. 2a).

There is, however significant first-round-pop (FRP) that occurs with significant divergence shortly after a time of 31.8 ms. This is displayed in both pressure and impulse space in the above figures.  And, unlike in the supersonic 7.62mm NATO test, the FRP in this subsonic 300 BLK from the Jolene silencer is relatively severe, relative to subsequent shots.  PEW Science analysis indicates that the intensity of the FRP signature at the muzzle, measured from the Resilient Suppressors Jolene with subsonic 300 BLK ammunition, is several times greater than subsequent shots.  This is a significant performance factor influencing the silencer’s muzzle Suppression Rating on this platform.  After FRP, the shot string normalizes and is uniform, as shown.

PEW Science Research Note 1: As previously discussed, the Jolene possesses a progressively ported and somewhat conventional stepped-curved-cone baffle geometry.  The included specialized direct thread mount with which the silencer was tested possesses an internally protruding cylindrical brake section with helical porting.  This internal brake influences early time gas dynamics.  However, the internal ported brake, as well as the progressively ported baffle geometry of the Jolene are susceptible to FRP combustion propagation.  As mentioned above, that is the primary factor resulting in the Jolene not achieving higher overall suppression performance.

PEW Science Research Note 2: The performance of the Resilient Suppressors Jolene with subsonic 300 BLK is relatively close to that of both the legacy Sig Sauer SRD762Ti-QD (6.39) and the Otter Creek Labs Hydrogen-L (6.94).  Note that both the Hydrogen-L and Jolene possess significant FRP in this regime, to bystanders.

With subsonic 300 BLK from an 8-inch barrel, the Resilient Suppressors Jolene produces a less severe signature to bystanders than many silencers on this host weapon. Direct comparisons with other silencers are provided in Section 6.138.2.

6.138.1.2 SOUND SIGNATURES AT SHOOTER’S EAR

Real sound pressure histories from the same 5-shot test acquired with PEW-SOFT at the shooter’s ear are shown below. Again, the waveforms are not averaged, decimated, or filtered. The data acquisition rate used in all PEW Science testing is 1.0 MS/s (1 MHz).

The Resilient Suppressors Jolene exhibits much less severe FRP severity differential at the shooter’s ear than was measured and analyzed at the muzzle.  The shooter’s ear Suppression Rating is nominally impacted by the FRP, which is a notable performance trait on this platform.

PEW Science Research Note 3: Note that after significant FRP divergence begins (Fig. 3b), gas momentum accumulation at the operator’s position rises to a peak amplitude only slightly higher than that from weapon system combustion signature (Figure 4). This delayed onset low amplitude momentum accumulation more significantly protects the weapon system operator than a bystander located adjacent to the muzzle, during FRP.  After FRP, the muzzle signature becomes less hazardous and the operator’s ear signature maintains severity.

PEW Science Research Note 4: Despite the FRP divergence, the signatures at the operator’s location with the Jolene are very consistent.  The signatures also display significant blowdown duration; this is a consequence of the silencer’s high flow restriction.  In this bolt-action rifle performance application, the higher back pressure increases suppression performance.  

It is apparent that the internal geometry of the Jolene silencer may be optimized for higher pressure, longer duration combustion than is produced by the subsonic 300 BLK cartridge.  Nonetheless, overall, the signature to the shooter is on par with high performance subsonic 300 BLK silencers like the Hydrogen-L, CAT ODB, and SRD762Ti-QD.

6.138.2 Suppression Rating Comparison - Subsonic 300 BLK

The Resilient Suppressors Jolene was developed with a focus on high pressure sound signature reduction (PEW Science Suppression Rating), without regard to flow rate. As previously discussed, its subsonic sound signature suppression performance is relatively high, though it is more optimized for supersonic ammunition. Figure 6 shows a performance comparison of many 30 caliber rifle silencer configurations tested with the subsonic 300 BLK cartridge shown in public PEW Science testing, to date. Unsuppressed and suppressed Suppression Ratings are shown for both the shooter and bystanders.  The silencers in the figure are shown in no particular order.

The performance of the Resilient Suppressors Jolene with subsonic 300 BLK is relatively close to that of both the legacy Sig Sauer SRD762Ti-QD (6.39) and the Otter Creek Labs Hydrogen-L (6.94).  Both the Hydrogen-L and Jolene possess significant bystander FRP in this regime.  The Jolene also possesses overall performance that is close to that of the Combat Application Technologies CAT/ODB/A1/718 (6.122) silencer on this platform, but has higher performance muzzle suppression than the higher flow rate CAT silencer, as expected.  The Q Full Nelson (6.99) and CGS Hyperion (6.71) both eclipse the performance of all of these silencers, in both FRP and overall signature suppression.

PEW Science Research Note 4: For a conventional baffle silencer, the Jolene does exhibit high performance in this regime. Despite its significant FRP, it eclipses the performance of the Surefire SOCOM300-SPS (6.57), which is a purpose-built subsonic 300 BLK silencer.  It also possesses higher performance than mid-size 300 BLK silencers, and produces significantly less hazardous signatures than smaller 30 caliber rifle silencers like the Energetic Armament VOX-S (6.25) and YHM Resonator-K (6.30).

As previously discussed, the FRP at the muzzle of the Jolene is a significant performance factor influencing the silencer’s muzzle Suppression Rating on this platform.  After FRP, the shot string normalizes and is uniform.  The FRP of the silencer is the primary factor contributing to the silencer not achieving a higher muzzle Suppression Rating and therefore not achieving a higher overall Composite Suppression Rating.  With further FRP control, the overall performance of the Jolene would rival that of the Hydrogen-L.  Nonetheless, for an ultra lightweight silencer optimized for high pressure rifle performance, the subsonic 300 BLK performance of the Resilient Suppressors Jolene is notable.

The difference in sound signature suppression performance from silencers in the subsonic 300 BLK suppression regime can be extremely significant. The user is encouraged to be mindful of the degree to which sound signature suppression, and resulting personnel hazards, can vary across designs. Small arm weapon system suppression performance is a spectrum. The PEW Science Suppression Rating and the Silencer Sound Standard help quantify this spectrum for end users and industry, objectively.

6.138.3 Review Summary: Resilient Suppressors Jolene on a Q mini FIX 300 BLK with 8-in Barrel

When paired with the Q mini FIX 8” 300 BLK and fired with Discreet Ballistics 190gr Subsonic Target ammunition, the Resilient Suppressors Jolene achieved a composite Suppression Rating™ of 67.6 in PEW Science testing.

The Resilient Suppressors Jolene is a 30 caliber rifle silencer that possesses significantly high supersonic centerfire rifle suppression performance with extremely light weight. Its subsonic suppression performance is also notable, despite exhibiting some first round pop.  The Jolene possesses a modular rear mounting interface that may be used with a variety of mounting solutions and muzzle devices; its included specialized direct thread mount is integral to its high performance, and results in a total system weight of 10.8 ounces, as tested.

The Resilient Suppressors Jolene possesses a progressively ported and somewhat conventional stepped-curved-cone baffle geometry.  The included direct thread mount with which the silencer was tested possesses an internally protruding cylindrical brake section with helical porting.  This internal brake influences early time gas dynamics.  PEW Science has not evaluated the Jolene silencer with other mounting systems.  It should be noted that mount changes, in general, may result in changes in gas dynamics from silencers.  In the case of the Jolene, it is postulated the changes might be significant, depending on combustion regime and barrel length.

The performance of the Resilient Suppressors Jolene with subsonic 300 BLK is relatively close to that of both the legacy Sig Sauer SRD762Ti-QD and the Otter Creek Labs Hydrogen-L.  Both the Hydrogen-L and Jolene possess significant FRP in this regime.  The Jolene also possesses overall performance that is close to that of the Combat Application Technologies CAT/ODB/A1/718 silencer on this platform, but has higher performance muzzle suppression than the higher flow rate CAT silencer, as expected.  The Q Full Nelson and CGS Hyperion both eclipse the performance of all of these silencers, in both FRP and overall signature suppression.

For a conventional baffle silencer, the Jolene does exhibit high performance in this regime. Despite its significant FRP, it eclipses the performance of the Surefire SOCOM300-SPS, which is a purpose-built subsonic 300 BLK silencer.  It also possesses higher performance than mid-size 300 BLK silencers, and produces significantly less hazardous signatures than smaller 30 caliber rifle silencers like the Energetic Armament VOX-S and YHM Resonator-K.

The rear mount threading of the Resilient Suppressors Jolene is 1.375”-24tpi; relatively common in many modern rifle silencers. As a result of this common modular interface, a plethora of mounting systems may be used. As previously discussed, the performance of the Jolene may be influenced by mounting system choice.  

The Jolene is not “full-auto-rated;” it is a bolt-gun silencer intended for relatively short duration firing schedules. The user is encouraged to contact the manufacturer for barrel length and firing schedule restrictions.

In this review, the Jolene performance metrics depend upon suppressing a subsonic intermediate rifle cartridge. While the sound signature of such cartridges can be suppressed to levels that may result in the desire of the shooter and bystanders to not wear hearing protection, PEW Science encourages the reader to remain vigilant with regard to all subsonic rifle cartridge suppression claims. The gas volume and combustion products created by firing a subsonic intermediate rifle cartridge such as 300 BLK are still significant; the measured pressure and impulse magnitudes, and their durations, illustrate this fact.

The hearing damage potential of subsonic rifle use is not insignificant. PEW Science encourages the reader to consider the Suppression Rating when deciding on an appropriate silencer and host weapon combination for their desired use.
