SSS.8 - Advanced Silencer Research
The PEW Science Laboratory was founded in 2019 to provide the public with consistent, reliable, and meaningful data and analysis on suppressed small arm weapon system performance. The Silencer Sound Standard was publicly launched in 2020 and is now the trusted independent source for silencer signature characterization and performance information, worldwide. The Standard presents more than just data; it provides the world with actionable information. By design, both the lab and the Standard are and will always remain independent from silencer industry ownership, influence, and control. Also by design, public education remains one of the PEW Science Laboratory mandates.
Outside of public view, PEW Science performs a significant amount of testing and engineering analysis on a variety of systems; most of which is never published. The private work products produced by the lab assist weapon system developers and end users in the public and private sectors with hazard quantification and performance information. The primary end goals are personnel protection and maximization of lethality.
Not everything has to remain behind closed doors. Section 8 of the Standard presents further research advancements that are cleared for public release. Section 8 will be populated as appropriate and as time allows. Enjoy :)
SSS.8.1 - Silencer Hazard Maps™
The Hazard Maps section of the Silencer Sound Standard further addresses the spatial nature of the discrete hazard quantification metrics already presented in Section 7.1 - Rankings with data input from Section 6.1 - Sound Signature Reviews. This subsection is the first to populate Section 8 - Advanced Silencer Research.
Why settle for the Suppression Rating at only the muzzle and ear when you can have it everywhere?
PEW Science can now show you estimates of personnel hazards from any new or existing tested suppressed weapon system at any point in space using the PEW-SOFT HD Blast Hazard Prediction Tool Hazard Mapper. We can now model 3D blast overpressure contours, based on real test data, and create Suppression Rating Silencer Hazard Maps for your use case! Shooting in a field or under an awning at your favorite range? What if your range is indoors? Hazard Maps can be created for all of these environments. Which systems give you the best shooting experience with the lowest hazards to you and bystanders?
